Pioneer • Educator • Military Leader
Mother of Physical Therapy in the United States

Mary McMillan was a visionary leader whose groundbreaking work established the foundation for the modern profession of physical therapy.

During World War I, she became the first Reconstruction Aide officially sworn into the U.S. Army, making her the nation’s first recognized physical therapist. As Head Aide at Walter Reed General Hospital, she developed rehabilitation protocols that restored wounded soldiers to health and function—setting enduring standards for military and civilian care and opening doors for women in military medical roles.

In 1921, she founded what is now the American Physical Therapy Association, authored the first American textbook on therapeutic massage and exercise, and championed rigorous education standards. Her work extended globally through the establishment of the first physical therapy training center in China. Even as a prisoner of war during World War II, she continued to provide care and rehabilitation to others.

A legacy of courage, compassion, service, and education—continuing to inspire generations.
