Requirements for Dance Major | Academic Advising Handbook

The below dance core courses are taught on rotation. It is important for dance majors or minors to complete the courses in the appropriate sequence in order to fulfill the prerequisite to enter an upper division course.

 

DANC 200       Dance Improvisation (every other year)

                        Dance majors/minors should take this course in their first or second year.

DANC 261       Dance History and Appreciation I (every other year)

DANC 271       Dance History and Appreciation II (every other year)

DANC 280       World Dance and Culture (every two years)

DANC 301       Choreography I (every other year)

DANC 336       Lighting Design for Dancers and Directors (every other year)

DANC 310       Anatomy and Kinesiology for Dancers I (fall every two years)

DANC 320       Anatomy and Kinesiology for Dancers II (spring every two years)          

DANC 325       Injury Prevention and Conditioning for Dancers (every other year)

DANC 401       Choreography II (every 1-2  years)

DANC 420       Teaching Methods of Dance (every two years)  

Technique Foundations (12 credits)

4 credits must be taken at the 300 level in ballet. The 0 credit option is only available for Dance majors and minors.

Recommended: Students take the same technique courses consecutively from fall to spring.

Ballet (8 credits)

Jazz or Contemporary Technique Courses (4 credits)

Context and Repertoire (12 credits)

  • DANC 325 Injury Prevention and Conditioning for Dancers 4 credits 
  • DANC 420 Teaching Methods of Dance 4 credits (prerequisite DANC 305 and 306; or 321 and 322; or 326 and 327)
  • DANC 429 Dance Ensemble II Advanced Company 0-1 credits 

Other courses approved by the department head

Dance majors must meet with their advisors in the spring prior to their final year to determine their Senior Dance Capstone project and submit a proposal toward the desired project.  If you plan to pursue a Choreography/Performance project, then Choreography II and Lighting Design for Dancers and Directors are both highly recommended courses for you to take prior to your proposal submission.
