  • What is the 1098-T Tax Form?
    • Pacific University is considered an Eligible Educational Institution and must submit a1098-T Form to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) for each enrolled student for whom a reportable transaction is made for qualified tuition expenses during the calendar tax year.
    • Please Note: The start and end of an Academic calendar year do not align with the U.S. federal tax year. Information reported on the 1098-T Form will encompass financial activity starting on or after January 1st through December 31.
  • Understanding the 1098-T Tax Form
    • Box 1: Payments Received for Qualified Tuition and Related Expenses
    • The total amount of payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses from all sources during the calendar year. The amount reported is the total amount of payments received less any reimbursements or refunds made during the calendar year that relate to the payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses during the same calendar year.
    • Per IRS Website:
      Qualified tuition and related expenses: Qualified tuition and related expenses are tuition, fees, and course materials required for a student to be enrolled at or attend an eligible educational institution.
      The following are not qualified tuition and related expenses.
      - Amounts paid for any course or other education involving sports, games, or hobbies, unless the course or other education is part of the student’s degree program or is taken to acquire or improve job skills.
      - Charges and fees for room, board, insurance, medical expenses (including student health fees), transportation, and similar personal, living, or family expenses.

    • Box 4: Adjustments Made for a Prior Year
      Payments received: Reimbursements or refunds of qualified tuition and related expenses made in current tax year that relate to payments received that were reported for any prior year after 2002.
      Amounts billed: Any reductions in charges made for qualified tuition and related expenses made during the calendar year that relate to amounts billed that were reported for any prior year after 2002.
    • Box 5: Scholarships or Grants
      The total amount of any scholarships or grants administered and processed during the calendar year for the payment of the student’s costs of attendance. Scholarships and grants generally include all payments received from third parties* (excluding family members and loan proceeds).

      *This includes payments received from governmental and private entities such as the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, civic and religious organizations, and nonprofit entities.

      Box 6: Adjustments to Scholarships or Grants for a Prior Year
      The amount of any reduction to the amount of scholarships or grants that were reported for any prior year after 2002.

      Box 7: Checkbox for Amounts for an Academic Period Beginning in January Through March of future Tax Year
      This box will be checked if any payments received for qualified tuition and related expenses reported for the current tax year relate to an academic period that begins in January through March of a future tax year.

      Box 8: Check if at least Half-Time Student
      This box will be checked if the student was at least a half-time student during any academic period during the current tax year.

      Box 9: Check if a Graduate Student
      This box will be checked if the student was a graduate student.

      Box 10: Insurance Contract Reimbursements or Refunds
      This box is used by insurers, the total amount of reimbursements or refunds of qualified tuition and related expenses made to the student during the current tax year.

  • How will I get my 1098-T Form?
    • Mail - USPS:
      Students who do not fill out a 1098 Electronic Consent form through Boxer Online will receive their 1098-T form in the mail via USPS. Forms will be placed in the mail on or before January 31.
    • Please ensure your address on file is correct, to verify your address or make changes please login to MyAccount or contact the Registrar’s Office for assistance.
    • Download:
      Students who fill out a 1098 Electronic Consent form will be able to view, download, and print their 1098-T form starting on January 31st through their Boxer Online portal.
  • How do I submit my Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number to Pacific University?
    • Students who have not submitted their Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to Pacific University will need to do so in order to obtain their 1098-T form(s).
    • Please fill out the Social Security Request Form.
    • You can print the form and fill it out. It can then be personally returned to the Business Office located on the first floor of Marsh Hall on the Forest Grove Campus or sent by mail.

    • - Parents or guardians will need to be provided with access to their student’s account to obtain a copy of the 1098-T form. Please have your student fill out a Student Contract or Add An Authorized User To Your Billing/Payment Portal.
    • - If you need help with viewing, downloading, or printing the form from Boxer Online please contact UIS at 503-352-1500.
    • - To verify or update your address, please login to MyAccount or contact the Registrar's Office at 503-352-2793.
    • - If you believe there is a problem with your 1098-T form, you did not receive your 1098-T form, or if you would like to be contacted to review your form, please fill out our Contact Request.
