Leadership and Mentorship Training
The Compass Mentor Program gives graduate and undergraduate health-professions students from around the Portland Metro region hands-on experience as leaders and professional-community members. You will gain valuable experience in building interpersonal relationships and practicing skills vital to your career goals.
Mentees are undergraduate or community college students who are early on in pursuing their path into healthcare.
Mentors are graduate students in any health profession education program who will offer leadership and guide discussion. Mentors will be recruited based on mentee’s desired matching qualities, such as professional program, first-generation experience, identity, or other sought-after factors that will help align your discussions and relationship.
Year-Long Mentor Program
- The goals of the program are:
- Serve rural and underserved populations entering the healthcare workforce,
- Help students with professional-identity formation,
- Develop tools for creating and leading community in interprofessional healthcare settings,
- Prevent burn-out of healthcare students and practitioners
How the Mentor Program Works
-
Complete the Training: Mentors complete training in motivational interviewing and coaching as methods for meeting and working with students earlier in their healthcare career journeys
Mentees complete training in how to navigate motivational interviewing to help define their goals and work toward what they want to accomplish in their professional careers.
- Attend the Conferences: each term there will be an in-person conference of all mentor participants.
- The fall conference will focus on interpersonal skills useful for developing your mentor relationship and your practitioner interpersonal skills with patients and colleagues.
- The spring conference will focus on providing resume building, interview skills, networking opportunities, and other career or graduate school advancement opportunities meant to be done by the mentor-and-mentee teams that have spent the year building their goals and relationship together.
- Meet 1-on-1: meet virtually or in person four times over the course of the year to use motivational interviewing to develop the mentor’s leadership and mentee’s action plan for advancement.
