Applied sustainability majors combine the fundamentals of ecology and permaculture with social sciences and humanities as they seek solutions to complex global challenges.

We emphasize hands-on learning. Students study and practice ecological design at permaculture sites near campus, including Pacific University’s own B Street Farm, a learning lab for food production and permaculture.

Dr. Julie Layshock

Dr. Layshock is an environmental/analytical chemist who teaches courses on quantitative chemistry, instrumental analysis and environmental toxicology in Pacific’s undergraduate chemistry and environmental science programs.

Research

The Pacific Undergraduate Research Conference is returning to an in-person format this fall on Nov. 10. For many presenters, these research projects will become the basis of their senior capstone project. Pacific is the No. 1 private research university in the Pacific Northwest, and as such, has a reputation for mentoring its undergraduate students especially in the areas of scientific and creative research.

B Street Farms to Become Boxer Gardens

Pacific University unveiled its new Boxer Gardens at an open house Aug. 29. The gardens sit on a compact .4-acre property on the Forest Grove Campus bordered on the west by Main Street, east by Hanson Stadium, north by the barber pole and south along the Stoller Center parking lot.
