Q. Are you currently employed? If yes, where do you work and what is your position?
Yes, I am a Senior Consultant, BI Analytic, at NW Permanente (Kaiser Permanente). I am an analyst responsible for quality metrics and Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) reporting for child wellness and immunizations.
Q. Approximately how many hours per week are you able to work while attending the accelerated 3-Year PharmD pathway on campus?
I work 20 hours per week.
Q. What is your educational background?
I have three college-level degrees – all in different subjects. I have a bachelor’s degree of science in mathematics, a bachelor’s degree in music education, and a master’s degree in business administration with a specialization in project management.
Q. What inspired you to pursue a career in pharmacy?
I have been working in the healthcare industry for more than a decade and I love it! Working from a desk (or from home) supplying data to clinical staff members who help patients has motivated me to seek a career where I can interact directly with patients. I want to be the person making the difference in their lives.
Q. Why did you choose Pacific University School of Pharmacy?
When I determined that I wanted to pursue a career in Pharmacy, I reached out to two of my amazing business partners and asked them if they would recommend the career path and where I might start my schooling. Both were former educators at Pacific University; one was also an alum. I then researched the school online and it met all of my needs – offering a three-year pathway, boasting a marvelous curriculum, and is conveniently located close to my home.
Q. What has been your favorite experience so far as a pharmacy student?
I had an opportunity as a first-year student to assist at a community flu clinic event. I have been monitoring flu immunizations for years in my current role, but never from the actual event. At the time, I was not trained or certified to administer vaccines, but I was able to assist with paperwork and help to set up syringes. It was an amazing chance to see the impact we can make in the community, and I am so excited to be a vaccinator at future events!
Q. What do you enjoy doing outside of pharmacy school?
Outside of pharmacy school, I enjoy cooking, reading, playing board games, hiking, camping, and randomly breaking into song and dance with my two children.
Q. What advice would you give to prospective or incoming pharmacy students?
It’s never too late to chase your passions. If this field speaks to you, Pharmacy is a rewarding field.
Q. Looking ahead, what career goals or interests are you considering after graduation?
I am passionate about underserved communities and healthcare equity and am considering several different avenues of pharmacy including community and ambulatory positions.
