Q. Are you currently employed? If yes, where do you work and what is your position?
I am not currently employed, but I am involved in a few school organizations such as APhA, Boxer Buddies, and I am a member of the executive team for ASHP! I've really enjoyed being able to participate in community-facing events during my first year.
Q. What is your educational background?
I have a bachelor's degree in psychology from Indiana University and worked as a licensed resource teacher prior to starting pharmacy school! I also took courses at Oregon State University, which is where I realized how much I love science (specifically chemistry)!
Q. What inspired you to pursue a career in pharmacy?
There are many reasons why I want to be a pharmacist, but the main reason is because there is a growing fear of science and pharmaceuticals, even though many lives depend on it for survival. I want to be a pharmacist so that I can be a resource for people who may not understand the field of medicine. I am interested in bridging the gap between the field of science and my community so that we can be healthier together.
Q. Why did you choose Pacific University School of Pharmacy?
I chose Pacific University because of the small class sizes and friendly community. I am a social learner, so I knew it would be crucial for me to have access to friends and faculty within my program; the school of pharmacy program has definitely met my expectations on that front!
Q. What has been your favorite experience so far as a pharmacy student?
So far, my favorite experience has been meeting new people and finding a study group! An accelerated pharmacy program can be tough to manage on your own, but finding friends (both P1s and P2s) has made this experience my favorite of my academic career. I also love how many opportunities are available to give back to the community!
Q. What do you enjoy doing outside of pharmacy school?
When it's not raining, I love spending time outdoors with my husband and my dog! You may catch us on hikes, golfing, or paddle boarding during the summer. For the rainy season, I'm usually inside with a good book or a knitting project.
Q. What advice would you give to prospective or incoming pharmacy students?
Don't be afraid to prioritize yourself while you are in this program! Pharmacy school requires professional-level time management, and there are only so many hours in a day. Eating, sleeping, and taking time for yourself are crucial for you to retain all the information you are learning.
Q. Looking ahead, what career goals or interests are you considering after graduation?
I am currently interested in emergency medicine pharmacy, but I'm keeping an open mind! I'm very excited for IPPEs and APPEs because I think those will give me the best insights into where I will feel the most at home.
