MS in Vision Science Admissions

Paragraphs

Admission Overview

The Pacific University master of science in vision science (MSVS) is open to applicants who have completed, or are on track to complete, the equivalent of a bachelor's degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution.

The program is tailored for individuals with backgrounds in optometry, biology, psychology, physics, or computer science. By bridging the gap between scientific inquiry and clinical practice, the MSVS prepares graduates for leadership roles in clinical patient care, high-impact academia, and cutting-edge industrial research.

Academic Pathways

The curriculum is structured to accommodate diverse professional goals and academic backgrounds:

  • Standard MS Pathway: Typically completed in two years (five semesters), this track provides a robust foundation in vision science research and methodology.
    • Graduates of an ACOE-accredited professional optometry program may eligible to transfer coursework to meet specific MS requirements. Equivalence will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis upon admission.
  • Concurrent OD/MS Pathway: Current Pacific University Doctor of Optometry (OD) students may pursue both degrees simultaneously. This integrated track allows students to diversify their expertise without significantly extending their time in school. The optimal time to apply is near the conclusion of the first semester of the first year of the OD program.

Admission Requirements

  • Eligibility: A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution is required. While an application may be submitted while the degree is in progress, it must be completed prior to matriculation into the MSVS program.
  • Prerequisites: Applicants must have completed all prerequisite coursework with a grade of “C” or higher in each subject.
  • English Proficiency: Non-native English speakers must demonstrate proof of English proficiency. See more details about English proficiency.

The Selection Process

Enrollment in the Vision Science Programs is limited, and admission is highly selective. The Vision Science Programs (VSP) Committee employs a holistic review process, evaluating candidates based on a comprehensive range of factors:

  • Academic Excellence: Overall undergraduate and/or professional records.
  • Professional Potential: Performance during the personal interview.
  • Writing and Communication: Quality of the application essay and other writing samples.
  • Recommendations: Strong support from letters of recommendation and the Reference Survey.
  • Experience: Prior engagement in research initiatives or clinical care.
  • Vocation: A demonstration of long-term commitment to pursuing a career in vision science.

Interview and Notification

Selected applicants who pass the initial review will be invited to an interview. Admission decisions are generally finalized within two weeks following the interview. Applicants will be officially notified of their status via email.

Admission Timeline

Standard MS Pathway

We utilize a rolling admissions process; applications are reviewed and processed immediately upon completion.

To ensure sufficient time for visa processing and administrative orientation, international applicants are strongly encouraged to complete their files by March 15. Applications received after this date will be considered on a space-available basis.

Concurrent OD/MS Pathway (for current Pacific OD Students)

To ensure proper academic planning and integrated course scheduling, current OD students should adhere to the following deadlines:

  • Fall Semester: December 1
  • Spring Semester: March 15

Admission is contingent upon students maintaining good academic standing. Candidates must not have substandard grades in any OD courses at the time of enrollment.

How to Apply

All applications must be submitted through the GradCAS online portal. To be considered for admission, your application file must include the following:

  • Curriculum Vitae (CV): A current summary of your academic background, research experience, and professional achievements.
  • Personal Essay: A formal statement describing your motivation for pursuing a graduate degree, your long-term career goals, and your research interests in the field of vision science.
  • Official Transcripts: Official transcripts from every college and university attended.
    • International Applicants: For degrees from a non-U.S.-accredited institution, an official course-by-course credentials evaluation report (e.g., WES or ECE) is required to verify degree equivalence.
    • Current Pacific Students: Submit an unofficial copy of your most recent Pacific University transcript to verify a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  • Letters of Recommendation
    • Standard Applicants: Two letters are required from individuals who have supervised your research or academic work. At least one letter must be from a professor who taught you in college. Recommenders must also complete the Pacific University Applicant Evaluation Form.
    • Current Pacific Students: Only one recommendation is required.
  • Proof of English Proficiency: Official documentation of English language proficiency is required.
    • Note: This requirement is waived for currently enrolled Pacific University OD students and applicants who hold an OD degree.
  • Application Fee: $38.

International Partnerships (MOU)

Applicants from institutions with a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) or established special arrangements with the Pacific University College of Optometry should contact the Program Director for specific application guidance.

Currently, these specialized MOU provisions apply exclusively to Kikuchi College of Optometry graduates applying to the MSVS Program. Inquiries for potential new MOUs should be sent to the Program Director or the Admission Office for qualification
