The following is a listing of off-campus summer undergraduate research opportunities spanning most natural sciences disciplines. Opportunities exist across the country and are a great way to get valuable experience, both to list on your resume and to help you determine your career goals.

This list shows programs available nationwide.  Contact your department faculty member if you are interested in one or more. These opportunities are competitive and have application deadlines ranging from late November to February and early March.

Michigan State University W.K. Kellogg Biological Station The NSF funded KBS REU Site “Ecological & Evolutionary Dynamics in a Changing World” gives students an opportunity to conduct full-time research in collaboration with our outstanding faculty, postdocs and graduate students.

Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) provides research experience and mentorship for undergraduate students who are interested in biomedical research. 

Mayo Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Program, sponsored by Mayo Graduate School, is for students interested in biomedical research.

Monmouth University School of Science Summer Research Program is a 12-week research experience for students to work on collaborative research projects under the supervision of School of Science faculty and staff.

NASA Space Life Sciences Training Program provides professional experience in space life science laboratory or computational projects in areas such as molecular, cell, organismal or synthetic biology, bioinformatics or bioengineering.  

National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases The STEP-UP Program provides hands-on summer research experience for high school and undergraduate students interested in exploring research careers.

National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship Program (UGSP) offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research. 

National Institute on Drug Abuse supports all students with a focus on increasing underrepresented populations in drug abuse research.

National Park Services Every year, the Scientists in Parks (SIP) Program places hundreds of college students, recent graduates, and early career professionals across the National Park System to work on natural resource management needs.  

NSF BIT SURE Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Summer 2020. Hosted by North Carolina State University

Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Summer Equity Research Program seeks diverse students from underserved, economically and socially disadvantaged communities.

Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Summer Interns Program are three-month paid summer internships designed to introduce college students to various fields of biomedical and occupational health research.

Portland State University This REU Site program focuses on the applications of microscopy and microanalysis in multidisciplinary research and provides opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in cutting-edge research projects. The participant recruitment is emphasized on underrepresented minorities, women, veterans of the US armed forces, students with disabilities, and nontraditional students.  

RISE: Research in Interdisciplinary STEM Education is is a 9-week residential summer research experience for undergraduate students in biology, chemistry, education, microbiology, mathematics, or physics. Participants will join interdisciplinary teams mentored by science, math, and education faculty to investigate STEM learning across formal and informal environments with a particular focus on understanding issues related to inclusivity and diversity in STEM.  

Stanford Biosciences: SSRP welcomes highly talented visiting undergraduates to apply – no prior research experience, including bioinformatic research experience, is necessary to apply or participate. For the SSRP 2021 remote program, SSRP scholars will be placed into research labs based on their current bioinformatic proficiency so that they can grow to their potential. The application will open on November 23, 2020 and close on February 1, 2021.

University of Alabama at Birmingham  The Summer in Biomedical Science (SIBS) Undergraduate Research Program will provide the opportunity for young people to be instructed in the techniques of modern biology while becoming integrated members of a vibrant clinical and scientific community.  

University of Hawaii at Manoa - Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU)  Participants in the Summer 2018 Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) will take advantage of high-throughput DNA sequencing and phylogenetic methods to study the identity and origins of Hawaiʻi’s native, endemic and invasive organisms. 

University of Oregon (UO) Summer Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) provides fellowship opportunities for undergraduate students from other universities and colleges to participate in ongoing research in Life Sciences laboratories at UO during the summer months.

University of Oregon Environmental Summer Research in Chemistry, Physics and Material Science Oregon REU program offers a variety of research projects for students interested in chemistry, physics, environmental chemistry, optics and materials science. Students work closely with faculty advisors, graduate students, and other research undergraduates for a unique summer experience.
