Arab American Heritage Month Interactive Activities

Body

As we celebrate Arab American Heritage Month, we want to encourage you to engage with each weekly puzzle to honor the extraordinary and enduring contributions Arab Americans have made - and continue to make - to our country and to the world.

The Arab American community has deep historical roots in this nation. The first known Arab immigrants arrived in 1527, before the United States was even a country, and have shaped the fabric of American life ever since. Arab Americans have advanced the nation's achievements in diplomacy, science, technology, as well as in art and culture. They have written poetry that moved generations, built businesses that anchored communities, made music that crossed borders, and served in the highest offices of government and scholarship while navigating profound misrepresentation, post -9/11 backlash, and the persistent erasure of their identities from the American story.

For a community often misunderstood, excluded, erased, or targeted with bias and discrimination, the impact of their fellow Americans joining them in honoring their heritage and contributions is deeply meaningful and enriches us all. This month, first initiated in 2017 and how permanently designated in states including Oregon, Illinois, Virginia, Indiana, and California, is a testament of decades of community advocacy, organizing, and the refusal to be rendered invisible. Arab American whose heritage traces to 22 nations across the Middle East and North Africa is a breathtakingly diverse community in geography, language, faith, and tradition.

To honor them fully we learn their stories, we amplify their voices, and we challenge the narratives that have tried to diminished them, while re-committing to the ongoing work of building a truly inclusive Beloved Community. Let's celebrate Arab Americans this month - and every month!
