OPB Documentary Screening, "Uncovering Boarding Schools," At Pacific University On Oct. 28
Pacific University and the Indigenous Student Alliance is partnering with OPB to bring the documentary, “Uncovering Boarding Schools: Stories Of Resistance and Resilience” to the Forest Grove Campus on Tuesday, Oct. 28.
Produced as part of OPB’s “Oregon Experience” series, the documentary follows the journey of Klamath Tribes member Gabriann “Abby” Hall as she uncovers her family’s experiences in Native American boarding schools, from the first generation forced to live on a reservation to the present. Filmmakers join Abby on a personal journey as she encounters hidden histories, fractured families and a legacy of resilience.
Pacific University archivist Eva Guggemos, who has conducted extensive research into the former Forest Grove Indian Training School, was interviewed for the documentary. Filmmakers also joined the Indigenous Student Alliance for the organization’s first powwow in May 2024.
The documentary screening begins at 7 p.m., in the Taylor-Meade Performing Arts Center on the Forest Grove campus. A moderated panel discussion with the show’s producer, Kami Horton, Eva Guggemos, anthropologist David G. Lewis (Grand Ronde), and ISA co-presidents will follow the screening.
Ahead of the screening, the community is invited to a community resource fair in the lobby of Berglund Hall beginning at 6 p.m.
Tickets for the screening are free, but advance registration is required.
The one-hour documentary will air on OPB on Monday, Nov. 3 at 9 p.m., and will be available on the PBS website beginning on Nov. 1. The documentary is also being distributed to PBS stations nationwide.
