Food Rescue works to diminish food waste and redistribute leftovers from campus events and garden harvests to local community shelters and food box programs.
Food Rescue originated as a student effort to rescue food that was being thrown in the trash after campus events. Food Rescue began to take root during the Fall of 2009, thanks to a cohort of students, staff, faculty, Dining Services, and community partners.
In the Spring of 2010, the program was recognized as a Center for Civic Engagement program and hundreds of pounds of food started to reach people in need. Food Rescue now also includes harvest from local gardens, such as Pacific's B Street Living Museum and the Maple Street Community Garden in Forest Grove.
As the program blossoms, Food Rescue continues to reflect Pacific University's pledge to cultivate a well-educated, engaged community committed to building a healthier future, both on campus and in a broader social context.
Food Donation Sites
Food Rescue seeks to strengthen existing food box programs in our immediate community and to supply quality food to local shelters that serve residents of Forest Grove, Gaston, Banks, and Hillsboro.
Past and current donation sites include the Tom McCall Family Resource Center, Community Action Family Center, Forest Grove Severe Weather Shelter (at the United Church of Christ), Hillsboro SOS Shelter, Forest Grove Senior and Community Center, and St. Vincent de Paul. We also try and help out students on campus by distributing to those students in need.

Please let us know if you have corrections or additions to this list.
- Get an RSVP of how many people are coming
- Ask catering service if they can do a pre-order/ask their opinion on how much food is needed for a certain number of people
- Consider the time and length of the event (for example, dinnertime and an event longer than two hours will require more food)
- Bring plastic containers to save leftovers so that they can be properly stored (short term food storage is available in the Civic Engagement Center refrigerator in Scott Hall)
The Center for Civic Engagement has a refrigerator in the Scott Hall kitchen to store rescued food or food that has been harvested from local gardens for donation. Please contact us if you'd like to learn more.
