Graduate Council
Approved by the Faculty Senate in December 2018 and by the University Council in February 2019, the Graduate Council is the university’s formal body responsible for review of the quality, consistency, and integrity of its programs of graduate study, including master’s and PhD degrees, in which there is a thesis, dissertation, or other culminating project that represents a new substantive contribution to knowledge in its discipline.
Graduate programs of this nature which are subject to external professional accreditation are exempt from Graduate Council oversight; however, they may voluntarily elect to be designated as Graduate Council-covered programs and follow the standards set by the Council. Graduate programs for which a thesis, dissertation, or other significant culminating project is not required, whether or not such programs are professionally accredited, are outside the purview of the Graduate Council, and will continue to be supported by the University Curriculum and Standards Committee.
Review includes approval responsibility as specified under powers and duties. The council meets on a monthly basis to review and approve, and to report to the provost on Graduate Council-covered graduate program curricular matters and overall Graduate Council covered graduate program academic standards not in the purview of individual colleges or programs.
For more information on the Pacific University Graduate Council, please consult section 2.5.15 in the University Faculty and Governance Handbook.
